What would the Founding Fathers think about Internet-based “cloud” computing?

Would James Madison, for example, agree with some current interpretations of the Fourth Amendment, which hold that old-fashioned letters stored in a dresser drawer enjoy stronger legal protection against search and seizure than an e-mail stored on the Web or a private post left for a friend on Facebook?
In a world where every computer is connected, where it doesn't matter whether your e-mail is on the hard drive in your bedroom or a server half a world away, where your critical company documents can be viewed from anywhere, where would the Founding Fathers draw the line for law enforcement? The "cloud," already well formed with Hotmail and Google docs, is a potential treasure trove for police investigators. But how can we make sure the cloud doesn't rain all over Americans' Fourth Amendment rights to avoid unfair searches?

That's the goal of a new coalition behind the Web site DigitalDueProcess.org. The group includes strange bedfellows, ranging from the right-leaning Americans for Tax Reform and the Competitive Enterprise Institute to the liberal American Civil Liberties Union. Google, Microsoft, Intel and a host of other technology companies are also involved. Their main goal is a rewrite of the outdated Electronic Privacy Communications Act of 1986 for the 21st Century.
“Technology has changed dramatically in the last 20 years, but the law has not,” said Jim Dempsey, vice president for public policy at the Center for Democracy and Technology, another member of the coalition. “The traditional standard for the government to search your home or office and read your mail or seize your personal papers is a judicial warrant. The law needs to be clear that the same standard applies to email and documents stored with a service provider while at the same time be flexible enough to meet law enforcement needs.”
Descriptions vary, but cloud computing generally refers to storing information or software on computer servers that can be accessed from multiple locations around the world – Gmail is a good example -- as opposed to data that must be accessed by someone who has physical access to a local computer or hard drive. Today, the rules of evidence gathering apply differently to data in the cloud.
Ryan Radia, a spokesman for the libertarian think tank the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said that there is plenty of judicial confusion about application of search and seizure laws to electronic communication -- in fact, federal courts have issued contradictory rulings. But in general, many Internet service providers turn over electronic records to investigators in response to a simple subpoena, while old-fashioned paper records require the higher standard of a judge-issued warrant. Just because information travels over a wire and sits on a server doesn't mean it should be less protected by the Constitution, Radia argued.
"If you get a letter from a friend of relative in the mail and leave it in the file cabinet in the basement, if law enforcement wants to read it they have to get a search warrant," he said. "But with cloud computing … judges have interpreted that the information has been handed over to third parties and is no longer considered to be private. Federal law ought to protect that information in the modern age."
More than theoretical constitutional issues are at stake. There's also real money. Tech companies like Microsoft and Intel are worried that concerns about privacy could stunt the growth of cloud computing, and recent research by the Pew Internet and American Life Project seems to validate this concern.
The report found that 69 percent of online Americans use at least one cloud service, such as Web-based e-mail, and 64 percent of them said they were concerned that law enforcement agencies could access their files. Only 22 percent said they weren't concerned.
"We run the risk of users lacking trust in cloud computing and in many information services if a user cannot be confident their information will remain secure," Radia said. "If cloud computing is going to realize its full potential, if the industry is going to succeed, we need to be sure there is privacy protection. We can't expect the technology to work around the limitations of federal law."
Among the groups' top goals: members want federal law to be "technologically neutral," meaning that search and seizure requirement would apply uniformly, regardless of the technology involved. That would mean a private communication -- be it handwritten or electronic -- would be governed by the same rules of evidence gathering. They also want to clear up inconsistencies in the application of federal law. Currently, in some cases, there's a lower legal standard for law enforcement to intercept an e-mail in transit than for that same agencies to read an e-mail stored on a recipient's computer. In other words, a single e-mail can be governed by various different legal standards during its life-cycle.
"A particular category of information should be afforded the same level of protection whether it is in transit or in storage," the group says in its "guiding principles."
While the group has gone to some pains to avoid sounding as if they are attacking law enforcement agencies, don’t expect them to hop on board the effort. Updates to the Electronics Communications Privacy Act would almost certainly curtail use of some evidence-gathering tools, such as the FBI’s much-maligned Carnivore software, which was designed to capture e-mail and Web transmissions going into and out of Internet Service Provider servers.

The group has already received a relatively warm welcome on Capitol Hill. House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Michigan, has said he would hold hearings this spring on potential updates to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
“Many Americans take for granted the protections of the Bill of Rights that prevent the government from coming into people’s homes without a valid search warrant. The rise of cloud computing should not diminish these privacy safeguards,” said Mike Hintze, Microsoft’s associate general counsel, in a blog post.
Change will not be easy, however, and isn't expected this year. Americans have a rather tortured relationship with privacy. They often say one thing ("Privacy is important to me") but do another ("Sure, thanks for the coupon, here's my Social Security Number") noted Lee Rainie, head of the Pew Internet and American Life Project. And when it comes to law enforcement issues, their opinions are even more contradictory, particularly since Sept. 11, 2001.
"Americans are concerned with bad actors doing bad things, and if you ask them if they are comfortable with law enforcement checking (online data) related to people who, for example, are going to hurt children, by and large they are," he said. On the other hand, they really value privacy, and are not comfortable with government agents having broad access to their data, he said. "The way people think about privacy is very context sensitive," he added.

Cancer Strategy #9 - Enzymes and Digestion
The pancreatic enzyme protocols for treating cancer make use of large amounts of pancreatic enzymes. They are taken on an empty stomach so they can go into the body to digest cancerous cells. Drs. Buck and Chojkier showed that TNF alpha causes oxidative stress in the liver cell and also causes the addition of a phosphorous molecule to a protein called C/EBP beta, which normally joins together DNA in the nucleus of the cell to make other proteins, such as albumin.
This extra phosphorous causes the C/EBP beta protein to leave the nucleus and go into the cytoplasm, where it can no longer make the albumin."We found that this phosphorylation makes the C/EBP beta exit the nuclear area and go into the cytosol, where there is no DNA for it to bind with. This means it can no longer produce the protein," said Dr. Chojkier. And this inability to produce albumin leads to the muscle wasting and weight loss.The researchers found several ways of stopping the downward spiral caused by TNF- alpha. One way was to use antioxidants, especially ones that focus on the liver. This blocked the chain of events leading to the export of C/EBP beta from the nucleus of the liver cells. "If we block oxidative stress, we normalize everything," explained Dr. Chojkier. "C/EBP beta remains in the nucleus, it contacts the DNA, and proteins are produced.

As you can see, protecting the liver and normalizing liver function is vital to reversing or stopping wasting. And if you don't stop wasting, you won't make it. You'll basically end up being killed by the wasting before the cancer kills you.

In the early 1900's a doctor in Wales, John Beard discovered that pancreatic enzymes destroyed cancer cells. He noticed that the fetal pancreas starts working and secreting enzymes at the 56th day of gestation. Fetus' don't digest anything till they are born. Beard wondered why did the pancreas in the fetus start working so early? He noticed that the day the pancreas started producing enzymes was the day the placenta stopped growing. The enzymes stopped this rapid growth.

His theory was that many placental cells remain in our body. When these misplaced placental cells get lost and can start growing, turning cancerous, if you don't have enough pancreatic enzymes. (By the way the medical community thought he was crazy. Now a hundred years later, technology has confirmed there are these cells.)

In 1911 he tested pancreatic enzymes for stopping cancer in mice and it worked. Naturally and unfortunately, he was blackballed and died in obscurity. Decades later Dr. Kelly read about his work, and cured himself of cancer using pancreatic enzymes and started treating and curing many cancer patients using pancreatic enzymes. Dr. Gonzales, sent to investigate Dr. Kelly, liked what he saw so much that he also treats cancer using pancreatic enzymes.
The major reason enzymes levels become depleted is that we eat mostly processed, irradiated and cooked food.

The digestive system was designed to process raw food. Raw food, when it is picked ripe, has enzymes in it that help break down that food in the upper stomach where it sits for 30 to 45 minutes. The enzymes in the food predigest that food. Then in the lower stomach the pancreas excretes more enzymes.
When you eat cooked, irradiated and processed foods, the enzymes have been killed; the food does not predigest in the upper stomach. So when it reaches the lower stomach two things happen. The pancreas must make extra enzymes to try and break down the food.
And often the food is only partially digested.

The pancreas, after decades of overworking, eventually is no longer able to produce an adequate supply of enzymes. So you develop low enzyme levels of all types of enzymes, and your body cannot naturally kill cancerous cells using enzymes.
In addition, food that is not completely digested all too often makes its way into the bloodstream. Especially if you have leaky gut syndrome from candida overgrowth. This partially digest food is treated as a toxin, and the immune system has to get rid of it. This puts an additional strain on the already overworked immune system.

Studies have found that the immune system treats the ingestion of cooked food as a toxic poison, causing a jump in white blood cells in an attempt to get rid of it as fast as possible.

Cancer...Eliminating These Fungal Infections Is Vital For Getting Rid Of Cancer

Some doctors theorize that candida or other systemic fungal infections cause or at the very least contribute to the development of cancer. This makes sense. A body wide candida infection plays havoc on the immune system. Not only does the immune system become overwhelmed and worn out from fighting the infection, but candida (or other fungus) excrete toxins that further weaken and harm the body.

The major waste product of candida is acetaldehyde, which produces ethanol. Ethanol may be great in cars, but in your body it causes excessive fatigue, and reduces strength and stamina. In addition, it destroys enzymes needed for cell energy, and causes the release of free radicals that can damage DNA.
Ethanol also inhibits the absorption of iron. Because iron is one of the most important oxygen supports in the blood, ethanol in your body creates low oxygen levels. And you know what happens when your body can't oxygenate well. Deal with candida if you want to beat cancer.
There is a simple test to tell if you have candida overgrowth.

First thing in the morning, before you put ANYTHING in your mouth, get a clear glass of water. Better still; leave it by your bed the night before. Work up a bit of saliva, and then spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour. If you have a candida yeast infection, strings (like legs) will travel down into the water from the saliva floating on top, or "cloudy" saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water. If nothing develops in 30 to 45 minutes, you are probably candida free.

Some doctors implicate fungi as a cause of leukemia. In 1999 Meinolf Karthaus, MD, watched three different children with leukemia suddenly go into remission upon receiving a triple antifungal drug cocktail for their "secondary" fungal infections.

In 1997 Mark Bielski stated that leukemia, whether acute or chronic, is intimately associated with the yeast, Candida albicans, which mutates into a fungal form when it overgrows.
Milton White, MD. believed that cancer is a chronic, infectious, fungus disease. He was able to find fungal spores in every sample of cancer tissue he studied. Other doctors feel the same. The cancer fighting strategy one Italian MD uses is to attack the candida by alkalinizing the digestive tract. He has his patients drink a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, baking soda, in a glass of water 30 minutes before breakfast. Some of his patients eliminate their cancer just doing this.
Author Doug Kaufmann asserts that fungi in foods may play a role in cancer. He has seen children become free of their documented leukemia once the child's parents simply changed the child's diet. Kaufmann's diet is base on the widely published problem of mycotoxin contamination of our grain foods.

Grains such as corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, and other foods such as peanuts, are commonly contaminated with cancer-causing fungal poisons called mycotoxins. One of them, called aflatoxin, just happens to be the most carcinogenic substance on earth.
He says we consume, on average, from 0.15mg to 0.5mg of aflatoxin per day. So it is not sugar alone that is the problem in our western diet, but fungal toxins that are found in the sugary grains. More than once has Kaufmann interviewed a caller (on his health talk show) who absolutely craved peanut butter and popcorn just prior to their diagnosis of cancer.
Kaufmann feels that antibiotics may play a role in this. Antibiotics destroy the normal, protective gut bacteria, allowing intestinal yeast and fungi to grow unchecked. Resulting in Candida overgrowth. This can lead to immune suppression, symptoms of autoimmune diseases, or even cancer.
"If the onset of any symptom or disease, cancer included, was preceded by a course of antibiotics," he says, "then look for a fungus to be at the root of your problem."

An eminent German oncologist says that cancer is caused by environmental toxins. Others agree. While there are obviously other issues, fungus, viruses, genetics, etc., the major change in the world that could have lead to the explosion of cancer over the last 100 years has been the introduction of tens of thousands of chemicals into the environment. Chemicals that we had never been exposed to before. Ones that our bodies don't know how to handle.
They overwhelm the defenses of your body and cancer develops. Unfortunately, if industry and the government they control have their way, it may even become worse.

Biotech companies have been aggressively promoting the use of genetically modified food. It's a financial goldmine for them. Unfortunately, there are several problems with genetically modified food. Even the scientists at the FDA resisted them till political pressure from the top approved it. Every independent study has shown problems with the eating of genetically modified food. Abnormal cell growth being high on the list. And no wonder.
Jeffrey Smith, author of Seeds of Deception writes on SeedsOfDeception.com:
"More worrisome is that the "promoter" used inside GM foods could get transferred to bacteria or internal organs. Promoters act like a light switches, permanently turning on genes that might otherwise be switched off. Scientists believe that this might create unpredictable health effects, including the potentially pre-cancerous cell growth found in the animal feeding studies mentioned above.

"Milk from rbGH-treated cows contains an increased amount of the hormone IGF-1, which is one of the highest risk factors associated with breast and prostate cancer, among others. Soy allergies skyrocketed by 50% in the UK, coinciding with the introduction of GM soy imports from the U.S."
Foods are not required to be labeled as GM foods.The only way to make sure you are not eating food that has been genetically modified is to eat organic food or food labeled non-gmo. Eating organic food will also reduce the amount of chemicals you are ingesting.
Types of toxins in your body
There are several types of toxic buildups in the body that need to be dealt with when fighting cancer. First there is cellular toxicity caused by the shunting of toxins into cells due to excess acidity in the blood, and the inability to release toxins in the cells for that very same reason.
Next is heavy metal and chemical toxicity coming from years of exposure to highly toxic heavy metals and chemicals. While many come from the environment, silver amalgam fillings, many vaccines and some other drugs put mercury and other toxins into our body. Most large fish have elevated mercury levels. Elevated levels of heavy metals disrupt the immune system, and must be dealt with when fighting cancer.

And then there is the toxic buildup in the colon of undigested foods and hardened fecal matter. Nutrient absorption is disrupted, and toxins sitting in that decaying mess are reabsorbed back into the body. This creates a constant stress on the immune system, and a further load on the body's detoxification systems. Colon cleaning needs to happen on the journey to good health.
The Chlorinated Water and Cancer Connection
Pathogens in water have led to many diseases. But did you know that what's put in your water to purify it may be causing your cancer (and heart disease)?
The French, with their lower cancer rates from consuming OPCs and resveratrol in red wine, have made red wine famous for its health benefits. There is another side to their lower cancer rates that most people don't know...
The French do not drink chlorinated water. They ozonate their water to purify it.
Does this make a difference? Absolutely.

We don't use chlorine because it's safe, we use it because it is cheap. We essentially still pour bleach in our water before we drink it. The long-term effects of chlorinated drinking water are disastrous.

According to the U.S. Council Of Environmental Quality, "Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine."
It may cause much heart disease too. Dr. Joseph Price wrote a highly controversial book in the late sixties titled Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine, and concluded that nothing can negate the incontrovertible fact, that the basic cause of arteriosclerosis, heart attacks and stroke, is chlorine.
Dr. Price later headed up a study using chickens as test subjects, where two groups of several hundred birds were observed throughout their span to maturity.
One group was given water with chlorine and the other without. The group raised with chlorine, when autopsied, showed some level of heart or circulatory disease in every specimen, the group without had no incidence of disease. The group without chlorine grew faster, larger and displayed vigorous health.

This study was well received in the poultry industry, and is still used as a reference today. As a result, most large poultry producers use dechlorinated water.
When chlorine is added to our water, it combines with other natural compounds to form Trihalomethanes (chlorination byproducts), or THMs. These chlorine byproducts trigger the production of free radicals in the body, causing cell damage, and are highly carcinogenic.
"Although concentrations of these carcinogens (THMs) are low, it is precisely these low levels that cancer scientists believe are responsible for the majority of human cancers in the United States". The Environmental Defense Fund Dr. Robert Carlson, a highly respected University of Minnesota researcher, sums it up by claiming, "Chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of modern times!"
Breast cancer, which now affects one in every eight women in North America, has recently been linked to the accumulation of chlorine compounds in the breast tissue. A study carried out in Hartford Connecticut, the first of it's kind in North America, found that:
"Women with breast cancer have 50% to 60% higher levels of organochlorines (chlorination byproducts) in their breast tissue than women without breast cancer."
It is not just drinking chlorinated water that is the problem.
Up to two thirds of our exposure to chlorine is due to inhalation of steam and skin absorption while showering. A warm shower opens up the pores of the skin and allows for accelerated absorption of chlorine and other chemicals in water.
The steam we inhale while showering can contain up to 50 times the level of chemicals than tap water due to the fact that chlorine and most other contaminants vaporize much faster and at a lower temperature than water. Inhalation is a much more harmful means of exposure since the chlorine gas (chloroform) we inhale goes directly into our blood stream.
"Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated levels of chloroform in nearly every home because of chlorine in the water." Dr Lance Wallace, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
If you take showers using chlorinated water and are dealing with cancer, clearly installing a shower filter to dechlorinate your shower water makes good sense.
Other Toxin Sources
In the process of eliminating as much toxic exposure as possible, you need to limit exposure from the chemicals in your carpets and walls of your home. Unless you've already taken special efforts to have a chemical free house, formaldehyde and many other chemicals have been outgassing toxic fumes in yours for years. Hulda Clark, in her books on fighting cancer and other diseases, recommends that all carpeting be pulled up, paneling and walls taken out and replaced, and so on - if you want to beat cancer. Pretty drastic stuff. A less overwhelming solution would be to get a photo catalysis air cleaner. Using technology developed by NASA, it puts out molecules that interact with VOC's, the chemicals put out by carpets, etc. and changes them into harmless carbon and water molecules.
Personal care items like shampoo, conditioner, or skin lotion often contain ingredients that add to the overburden of chemicals your immune system must get rid of. Try to use as natural and pure personal care items with as few chemical listed in the ingredients as possible to reduce that overload. The less overwhelmed your immune system is, the better it can fight the cancer.
The buildup of toxins in your body reduces cell oxygenation and toxins will damage DNA, causing cell mutation. The key is to protect your cells by making sure you are taking plenty of antioxidants, stop drinking chlorinated water or taking showers in it, and get rid of the buildup of toxins in your body using safe and natural detoxifiers.
There are three types of detoxification to be done, cellular detoxification, intestinal detoxification and a more general body detoxification in which we will include heavy metal detoxification. There is some crossover here, any detoxifier will work in more than one way. There is plenty of research showing that cancer thrives in an acidic environment, and doesn't survive in a normal, more alkaline environment. Cancer cells make your body even more acidic as they produce lactic acid. So if you have cancer, your pH levels are low and your body is too acidic.

Taking action to make your body more alkaline is vital in the battle against cancer. Unfortunately...
The majority of the foods and drinks we consume are acidic, such as meat, grains and sugar, with colas and other soft drinks being highly acidic. So unless you have been eating a very healthy diet, full of fresh fruit and vegetables, your body is way too acidic. Creating a very good environment for cancer to grow in.

Actually, too much acidity is an underlying factor in many degenerative diseases -- diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia and more. A basic maxim of natural physicians is: Balance the bio terrain. Do this first, then everything can come back to normal.
Taking medicines or supplements while your body is highly acidic is a bit like washing dishes in a sink of dirty water, even when you put in plenty of soap, you can't get the dishes clean.
According to Keiichi Morishita in his book, Hidden Truth of Cancer, when your blood starts to become acidic, your body deposits acidic substances in the blood (usually toxins) into cells to allow the blood to remain slightly alkaline. However, this causes your cells to become more acidic and toxic, which results in a decrease of their oxygen levels, and harms their DNA and respiratory enzymes.

Over time, he theorizes, these cells increase in acidity and some die. These dead cells themselves turn into acids. However, some of these acidified cells may adapt in that environment. In other words, instead of dying - as normal cells do in an acid environment - some cells survive by becoming abnormal cells.

These abnormal cells are called malignant cells. Malignant cells do not correspond with brain function nor with our own DNA memory code. Therefore, malignant cells grow indefinitely and without order. This is cancer.

As you can see, he is describing, from a different point of view, the process by which low oxygen levels turn some cells cancerous. Alkaline water (including the water in cells) holds a lot of oxygen. Acidic water holds very little oxygen. So the more acidic your cells are, the less oxygenated they will be. To make matters worse, the fermentation process cancer cells use to produce energy creates lactic acid, further increasing acidity and reducing oxygen levels.
Sang Whang, in his book Reverse Aging, points out that toxins are acidic. If your blood is too acidic, toxins will not be released from your cells into the blood. So your cells can't be detoxified. This buildup of toxins in your cells results in acidic, poorly oxygenated cells, which can turn cancerous. He explains,
"In general, degenerative diseases are the result of acid waste buildups within us. When we are born, we have the highest alkaline mineral concentration and also the highest body pH. From that point on, the normal process of life is to gradually acidify. That is why these degenerative diseases do not occur when you are young. Reverse aging requires two separate steps: chemical and physical. The first step is to lower the acidity of the body so that it can dispose of acidic wastes in the blood and cellular fluids safely and easily. The second step is to physically pull out old stored wastes into the blood stream so that they can be discharged from the body."
There is a long history of reversing cancer simply by alkalinizing the body. It is one of the basic strategies in the battle against cancer and for improving your health in general.

Cancer Strategy #4: Lack Of Methylglyoxal Causes Cancer...Getting Methylglyoxal Into Cells Puts The Brakes On Cancer
Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi was the Nobel Laureate in Medicine in 1937 for the isolation and discovery of Vitamin C. Known as the "Father of Nutritional Science", he also discovered iso-flavones and vitamin P. In his last 40 years, he researched the regulatory processes of cell growth, and thereby the regulation of cancer itself.

He made a rather amazing breakthrough about cancer. In 1963 the prestigious magazine "Science" published a remarkable article about his research. In it Dr. Szent-Gyorgyi identified two substances, one called Retine, which inhibited cancer growth, and the other called Promine, which promoted cell growth and made cancerous cells grow faster.

He explained that these were very small molecules that were highly potent in controlling cell division. His research using mice achieved shrinkage of tumors by increasing the ratio of Retine to Promine with daily injections of Retine. Other researchers obtained similar results.
There were no harmful or toxic side effects.

In another "Science" article in 1967 he announced that his laboratory had isolated and manufactured Retine, which retards cell growth, in the form of a Carbonyl compound called Methylglyoxal.

Again, in animal studies he showed that injecting Methylglyoxal daily into mice with cancer was highly effective. The study was divided up into 5 groups of 20 mice each. Every mouse in the control group died in the first 26 - 34 days. All mice were observed for 300 days. The first group began treatment 1 hour after inoculation with cancer. 15 survived
In the second group, beginning treatment 4 hours after inoculation, 13 animals survived. The third group began treatment 24 hours afterwards and 7 survived. The fourth group waited 48 hours and 4 survived.

In an interview in Prevention magazine in 1972 conducted by Jane Kinderlehrer, he explained that he and "Dr. Egyud have found that retine (methylglyoxal) stops the growth of cancer cells without poisoning other cells. When retine is present in sufficient concentration, no cell division can occur while vital cellular processes go on unhindered."

An underlying cause of cancer is low cellular oxygenation levels. In newly formed cells, low levels of oxygen damage respiration enzymes so that they cells cannot produce energy using oxygen. These cells can then turn cancerous.

In 1931 Dr. Warburg won his first Nobel Prize for proving cancer is caused by a lack of oxygen respiration in cells. He stated in an article titled The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer that "the cause of cancer is no longer a mystery, we know it occurs whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirements."

"Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes."

Poor oxygenation comes from a buildup of carcinogens and other toxins within and around cells, which blocks and then damages the cellular oxygen respiration mechanism. Clumping up of red blood cells slows down the bloodstream, and restricts flow into capillaries. This also causes poor oxygenation. Even lack of the proper building blocks for cell walls, essential fatty acids, restricts oxygen exchange.

What Warburg and other scientists found was that respiratory enzymes in cells, which make energy aerobically using oxygen, die when cellular oxygen levels drop.
When this happens, the cell can no longer produce energy aerobically. So, if the cell is to live, it must, at least partially, ferment sugars, producing energy anaerobically.
According to Warburg, cells that produce energy by fermenting sugars may turn cancerous. Warburg's contention is this...
The cells that cannot produce energy aerobically, cannot produce enough energy to maintain their ability to function properly. So they lose their ability to do whatever they need to do in the body.

Fermentation allows these cells to survive, but they can no longer perform any functions in the body or communicate effectively with the body. Consequently, these cells can only multiply and grow. And may become cancerous. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say, they change into cancer cells.

Decades ago, two researchers at the National Cancer Institute, Dean Burn and Mark Woods, (Dean translated some of Warburg's speeches) conducted a series of experiments where they measured the fermentation rate of cancers that grew at different speeds. What they found supported Dr. Warburg's theory. The cancers with the highest growth rates had the highest fermentation rates. The slower a cancer grew, the less it used fermentation to produce energy.
Naturally Warburg's contention was challenged and tested by other scientists.

Some researchers claimed his theory was not valid after they had measured a particularly slow growing cancer, and found no fermentation at all. And if cancer could grow with no fermentation, then fermentation, or lack of oxygen respiration, was not the cause of cancer. Dean Burn and Mark Woods checked those results.

Using more sophisticated equipment, they determined that the equipment these researchers used to measure fermentation levels was not accurate enough to detect fermentation at low levels. Their testing, using newer and more accurate equipment, showed that even in those very slow growing cancer cells, fermentation was still taking place, at very low levels.

Pietro Gullino, also at the National Cancer Institute, devised a test which showed that this slow growing cancer always produced fermentation lactic acid. Silvio Fiala, a biochemist from the University of Southern California, also confirmed that this slow growing cancer produced lactic acid, and that it's oxygen respiration was reduced.

Further research into Warburg's theory showed that when oxygen levels were turned down, cells began to produce energy anaerobically. They ultimately became cancerous when levels went low enough. It took a reduction of 35% in oxygen levels for this to happen.

J. B. Kizer, a biochemist and physicist at Gungnir Research in Portsmith, Ohio explains, "Since Warburg's discovery, this difference in respiration has remained the most fundamental (and some say, only) physiological difference consistently found between normal and cancer cells. Using cell culture studies, I decided to examine the differential responses of normal and cancer cells to changes in the oxygen environment.

"The results that I found were rather remarkable. I found that... "High 02 tensions were lethal to cancer tissue, 95 percent being very toxic, whereas in general, normal tissues were not harmed by high oxygen tensions. Indeed, some normal tissues were found to require high 02 tensions. It does seem to demonstrate the possibility that if the 02 tensions in cancer tissues can be elevated, then the cancer tissue may be able to be killed selectively, as it seems that the cancer cells are incapable of handling the 02 in a high 02 environment."

Low oxygen levels in cells may be a fundamental cause of cancer. There are several reasons cells become poorly oxygenated. An overload of toxins clogging up the cells, poor quality cell walls that don't allow nutrients into the cells, the lack of nutrients needed for respiration, poor circulation and perhaps even low levels of oxygen in the air we breathe.

Cancer cells produce excess lactic acid as they ferment energy. Lactic acid is toxic, and tends to prevent the transport of oxygen into neighboring normal cells. Over time as these cells replicate, the cancer may spread if not destroyed by the immune system.
Chemotherapy and radiation are used because cancer cells are weaker than normal cells and therefore may die first.

However, chemo and radiation damage respiratory enzymes in healthy cells, and overload them with toxins, so they become more likely to develop into cancer. The underlying cancer causing conditions are worsened, not improved. And the cancer usually returns quickly a second time unless you make changes to support the health of your body.
The implication of this research is that an effective way to support the body's fight against cancer would be to get as much oxygen as you can into healthy cells, and improving their ability to utilize oxygen. Raising the oxygen levels of normal cells would help prevent them from becoming cancerous.

And increasing oxygen levels in cancer cells to high levels could help kill those cancer cells.
A nurse who works in medical research said, "It's so simple. I don't know why I never thought of it before. When we're working with cell cultures in the lab, if we want the cells to mutate, we turn down the oxygen. To stop them, we turn the oxygen back up."
Ma Lan, MD and Joel Wallach DVD, point out that one type of white blood cells kills cancer cells by injecting oxygen creating hydrogen peroxide into the cells.

It is not easy to get additional oxygen into cells. Most approaches don't work well. Breathing oxygen is still limited by the amount of hemoglobin available, and pH levels. Dr. Whittaker points out, quite rightly, that liquid oxygen supplements that release oxygen into the blood, which most of them only do, can't get oxygen into the cells.

Is Human Growth Hormone a Key to Longevity?

FRIDAY, Oct. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Adults who long for the vitality of their younger days may be curious about trying injections of human growth hormone, the same substance allegedly used by some Major League Baseball players to boost their athletic performance.
But can it really turn back the hands of time?

Studies of human growth hormone in healthy adults are limited. And what rigorous scientific evidence there is suggests that the risks -- and they can be substantial -- outweigh the benefits.
"I think people are looking for a pill or an injection or something that will cause them magically to become younger," said Dr. Hau Liu, associate chief of endocrinology and co-director of chronic care management at Valley Medical Center in San Jose, Calif. "At least from our view of the data, our conclusion is that it's not the fountain of youth."

Liu was lead author of an analysis of data culled from randomized, controlled trials of growth hormone use in healthy older adults. His team's study, published last year in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found an association between growth hormone use and slight changes in body composition, but no changes in other important health outcomes.

What's more, users of growth hormone had high rates of soft tissue swelling and joint pain, compared to people who didn't get these injections. There was also an increased risk of impaired blood sugar control or diabetes. Although this finding was not statistically significant, Liu suggests that it is "worrisome" given the epidemic rise of type 2 diabetes in the United States.
Human growth hormone is a protein made by the pituitary gland. It's important for normal development and maintenance of tissues and organs, and is especially important for normal growth during childhood, according to the U.S. National Institute on Aging.

As people enter their 40s, the amount of growth hormone produced starts to decline. And, despite a lack of solid evidence, some people believe that bolstering levels of the hormone through injections will help stave off the effects of aging.

In the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of synthetic human growth hormone to treat children with short stature and some other growth problems caused by childhood diseases.

The FDA, however, prohibits drug companies from marketing growth hormone for "off-label" uses such as anti-aging. But that hasn't stopped some physicians from prescribing growth hormone to patients willing to pay the price.

It's estimated that some patients spend as much as $1,000 to $2,000 a month on growth hormone for anti-aging purposes, says the American College of Physicians.
"I suspect that the threat of legal action will be the only way this inappropriate use of growth hormone will be curbed," said Dr. Mary Lee Vance, a professor of internal medicine and neurosurgery at the University of Virginia Health System, who specializes in pituitary diseases.
Vance is concerned about the potential harm to patients. She once corresponded with a patient who took growth hormone ostensibly "to prevent aging." He died from a heart attack six months after starting the therapy, which someone else had prescribed, she said.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists says there's currently no place for the use of growth hormone (GH) as an anti-aging agent. "The future role of GH therapy in various clinical conditions should be explored through appropriate scientific investigation and clinical verification," the association writes on its Web site.

Still, proponents of growth hormone therapy remain resolved. In April, a worldwide coalition of physicians and scientists in anti-aging medicine called on the U.S. Congress to reject proposed legislation that would classify human growth hormone as a Schedule III controlled substance, which would tighten restrictions on how it's dispensed.

Meanwhile, scientific investigation continues. Liu intends to expand his research to examine a combination of growth hormone with other agents. "There's some evidence that multiple agents somehow may have some synergistic effect on outcomes, and that's what we're trying to investigate further," he said.

But until those results are in, he suggests that the best life-extending advice comes from our mothers. "Exercise, eat well, don't smoke: Those are the therapies, really, that will help enhance your quality of life and increase your probability of living a long, healthy life," he said.

Scams and Shams That Prey on Cancer Patients

MONDAY, Sept. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Cancer patients often turn to the Internet as a source of information and hope. But all too often, those hopes are betrayed by purveyors of so-called cancer "cures" that are anything but, experts say.

Earlier this month, five companies were charged with making false and misleading claims for cancer cures, and settlements were reached with six other companies, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced. Products marketed by the companies included essiac teas and other herbal mixtures, laetrile, black salve (a corrosive ointment), and mushroom extracts.
"There is no credible scientific evidence that any of the products marketed by these companies can prevent, cure, or treat cancer of any kind," said Lydia Parnes, director of the FTC's bureau of consumer protection, the Associated Press reported.

In June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued warning letters to two dozen companies peddling everything from cure-all teas to tablets and tonics. And earlier this year, more than 100 manufacturers of such products were issued similar letters.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, black salves are one of the most dangerous of these fake cures. The products, which supposedly "draw out" the disease from under the skin, can actually burn the skin and cause scarring.
Which is not to say that none of these compounds has potential as cancer fighters. But consumers need to be careful.

"Many of these compounds touted as having beneficial effects have lots of lab research, but it's more selling hope in a jar based on preliminary lab research," said Sarah Wally, a nutritionist with the American Institute for Cancer Research in Washington, D.C. "That's not fair to the consumer, particularly consumers with cancer who have a really strong motivation to try anything that might offer hope."

Many of these so-called cures or preventive treatments won't actually cause harm (except to your wallet), but some can interact with regular, supervised medical treatment, Wally said.
"Antioxidants can actually interfere with chemotherapy and radiation treatment," she said. "Some people think, 'I'm just drinking juice.' But they might be drinking two gallons of juice a day of super-antioxidant juice compound, not thinking to discuss it with their doctor."
And, some consumers may actually forego lifesaving conventional treatments in favor of shams.
Here's some advice from the experts:

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," said Dr. Ted Gansler, director of medical content for the American Cancer Society. Beware of claims that one treatment will cure all types of cancer or more than one type of disease. Also be leery of language such as "scientific breakthrough," "miraculous cure," "secret ingredient" and "ancient remedy," as well as claims that a product is "natural" and therefore safe. And take note of claims that the product has limited availability and that the company needs advance payment.
Find out if the product has ever been tested in humans. Laboratory and animal research is fine, but only as a starting point, not as a basis for recommending the therapy in humans, Wally said.
"Be careful about the credentials of the people promoting the treatment," Gansler said. "The possibility that someone with no medical or scientific treatment is going to come up with a cure for cancer or other diseases is not very likely." Reliable sources of information include the American Cancer Society, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. "Watch out for evidence that is only testimonial," Gansler said. "In some of the most notorious alternative clinics, people will be diagnosed with cancer who don't even have cancer and, later on, they're 'cured.' " The "patient" may actually believe he or she was cured.
Be on the lookout for obvious factual errors. If someone says their "Stage 7" cancer has been cured, be leery. There is no "Stage 7" cancer.
Wally advised: "Before you wholeheartedly jump into these things, you need to really sit down and have a discussion with your physician." This is especially true in an age when alternative and complementary medicines are gaining acceptance. It can be tricky distinguishing between something bogus and something that may have a benefit, Wally added.

Clinical Trial Ended for Prostate Cancer Vaccine
Biotech startup Cell Genesys has ended a clinical study of its prostate cancer vaccine GVAX due to a rise in deaths among users of the vaccine compared with those taking another drug, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"What we do not know is the reason for the imbalance in deaths," Cell Genesys CEO Stephen Sherwin was quoted as saying. He labeled the interim trial results "very disappointing and surprising news."

The Phase III trial of the vaccine had begun in 2005. Of 408 people with spreading (metastatic) prostate cancer who participated in the trial, 114 had died. Sixty-seven of those deaths involved people using GVAX and the chemotherapy drug Taxotere, while the other 47 deaths involved people taking Taxotere and the corticosteroid prednisone, the newspaper said.
Another trial, which will continue, uses GVAX by itself. Participants in that trial are said to be generally healthier than those in the discontinued study, the Chronicle reported.

Disappointing Results Noted in Anti-Clotting Drug Trials
Results from late-stage trials of the anti-clotting drug apixaban have been disappointing, said makers Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Early data from the Phase III testing of apixaban showed the drug wasn't better than a current drug, Lovenox, in preventing clotting complications in people who had knee replacement, the companies said.
The drug makers also announced they would postpone plans to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve apixaban for venous thromboembolism, a condition that includes deep vein thrombosis. The filing had been slated for the second half of next year, the Journal said.

Canadian Food Poisoning Death Toll Jumps

The Canadian government has revised upward the death toll associated with tainted meat products to 12 from four, The New York Times reported.
Earlier this week, it had been reported that in addition to the deaths, there were 26 confirmed cases of people sickened by the recalled cold cuts, which may be tainted with listeria bacteria. Another 29 suspected cases are awaiting analysis, a number that is expected to rise, the Times reported.
Some 220 products have been recalled by Maple Leaf, one of Canada's largest food makers. It has closed the Toronto plant where the recalled products were produced for sanitizing, the newspaper said.

Gleevec Given Priority FDA Review for Intestinal Cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given priority review to the Novartis drug Gleevec (imatinib mesylate) as a treatment for gastrointestinal cancer after surgery, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Priority review means the agency is likely to decide whether to approve Gleevec for gastrointestinal stromal tumors within six months, instead of the typical 10 months. The drug is already approved to treat other types of cancer.
Novartis said in clinical testing, people with kit-positive gastrointestinal cancer who got Gleevec lived longer and were 89 percent less likely to have the cancer return than those who didn't take the drug, the wire service reported.
A protein mutation that characterizes kit-positive forms of this cancer is present in more than 90 percent of cases in the United States, the AP said.

TV Ad Condemns the Hot Dog

A television ad that links eating hot dogs with colon cancer doesn't exactly cut the mustard, critics charge.

"I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage colon cancer," mourns a little boy in the 33-second ad, according to the Associated Press. But in truth, the boy and two hot-dog-eating co-stars don't have the disease, the AP added.
The ad is sponsored by a group with vegetarian ties called The Cancer Project. Its president, Dr. Neal Barnard, defends the video as "a way to raise appropriate concern about a deadly concern."
The ad is premised on a November 2007 study that found eating 50 grams per day of processed meats over several years increases the eater's risk of colon cancer by 21 percent. That works out to about one hot dog per day, or two slices of bologna, or five slices of bacon each day, the AP said.
The ad's sponsor wants processed meats banished from school lunch menus nationwide. But critics say the video goes too far.
"My concern about the campaign is it's giving the indication that the occasional hot dog in the school lunch is going to increase cancer risk," the wire service quotes the American Cancer Society's nutrition director, Colleen Doyle, as saying. "An occasional hot dog isn't going to increase that risk."

Toxins Found in Frozen Shellfish Imported from Ireland

Frozen mussels imported to the United States from Ireland may contain a toxin that can cause stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Two cases of azaspiracid toxin poisoning occurred in July in the state of Washington, according to an FDA news release, and further examination of other containers of "Mussels in a Garlic Butter Sauce" from the same production lot imported by Bantry Bay Seafoods also contained the azaspiracid toxins.

The FDA recommends that consumers discard Bantry Bay Seafood frozen cooked products with "best before end" dates on the side of the box ranging from January 23, 2009, to November 15, 2009: Mussels in a Garlic Butter Sauce; Mussels in White Wine Sauce; and Mussels in Tomato and Garlic Sauce.

The Bantry Bay Seafood products are sold frozen in 1 pound cardboard packages in stores throughout the United States, the FDA says, and store operators have been asked to remove them.

Azaspiracid toxins have never been found in U.S. shellfish beds, the FDA says. They are odorless, tasteless, and can't be destroyed by freezing, cooking, or boiling. Symptoms occur within two hours after the seafood has been eaten and can last up to three days.

Drinking Red Bull May Cause Heart Damage:

Study:

Drinking too much of the popular Red Bull energy drink may lead to heart damage, says an Australian study that included 30 university students, ages 20 to 24.
The researchers found that drinking just one 250ml sugar-free can of the caffeinated drink boosted the "stickiness" of the blood and increased the risk of blood clots. After drinking Red Bull, the students had a cardiovascular profile similar to that of someone with heart disease, the Times (U.K.) reported.

The results were alarming and suggest that older adults with symptoms of heart disease shouldn't drink too much Red Bull, said study author Scott Willoughby, of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide University.
In a statement, Red Bull officials said the drink had been proved safe by numerous scientific studies, and that it had never been banned from anywhere it had been introduced, the Times reported.
Red Bull is sold in 143 countries but is banned in Norway, Denmark and some other countries due to health concerns.

Teens Having Easier Time Getting Prescription Drugs:

It's easier to illegally obtain prescription drugs such as OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin or Ritalin than it is to get beer, say a growing number of American teens.
Researchers at the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University surveyed 1,002 12- to-17-year-olds and found that 19 percent said it was easier for them to obtain prescription drugs than to get their hands on beer, cigarettes or marijuana, compared with 13 percent a year ago, The Washington Post reported.
The study also found that 34 percent of teens who abuse prescription drugs get them at home or from their parents.
About 25 percent of the teen respondents said marijuana is the easiest substance to buy, and 43 percent of 17-year-olds said they could purchase marijuana in less than an hour, The Post reported.

Gene Mutation Linked to Colorectal Cancer:

A gene mutation strongly linked to colorectal cancer has been identified by Northwestern University researchers. People with the TGFBR1 ASE gene mutation have a 50 percent higher risk of colorectal cancer than the general population.
"This probably accounts for more colorectal cancers than all other gene mutations discovered thus far," said study lead author Boris Pasche, Agence France Presse reported.
The TGFBR1 ASE mutation results in decreased production of an important receptor for TGF-beta, the most potent inhibitor of cell growth. A reduced ability to inhibit cell growth means it's easier for colon cancer to develop. The study was published in the journal Science.
"The reasonable expectation is this finding will save some lives," said Pasche, AFP reported. "We will be able to identify a larger number of individuals that are at risk of colorectal cancer and, in the long term, maybe decrease the cases of colorectal cancer and of people dying from it by being able to screen them more frequently."

Lack of Judgment Endangers Teen Drivers:

A lack of judgment about the risks of driving may explain why teens have the highest crash and fatality rates of any age group, according to Canadian researchers.
The team at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto evaluated 262 high school students and found they consistently underestimated the risks of driving due to a number of mistaken beliefs, CBC News reported.
For example, the teens assumed that:
Their age and agility would enable them to overcome the effects of poor driving conditions or intoxication better than more experienced drivers.
Vehicle and highway design were more likely than human error to cause crashes.
In the event of a crash, doctors would be able to save their lives and leave them unscathed.
"Students need to comprehend that it is a lack of judgment, not only lack of skill, that increases the risk of injury to oneself and others," said Dr. Najma Ahmed, assistant trauma director at St. Michael's, CBC News reported.
The study was published in the August issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Bush Signs Bill Banning Lead in Children's Products:

Legislation that bans lead from children's products was signed Thursday by President George W. Bush, giving the United States the toughest standard in the world. The bill was passed by both houses of Congress two weeks ago.
Under the new law, lead beyond minute levels is prohibited in products for children under 12 years old, the Associated Press reported. Last year, lead paint was a major factor in U.S. recalls of 45 million toys and other children's products, mainly from China.
The new legislation also bans the use of phthalates, chemicals used to make plastic products softer and more flexible. It also gives the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission more money and power to oversee testing of products and to penalize violators.
Each year in the United States, unsafe products cause about 28,000 deaths, according to the CPSC. Last year, faulty consumer products injured more than 33 million people, the AP reported.

Seniors Having More Sex Than Ever

WEDNESDAY, July 9 (HealthDay News) -- When it comes to sex, grandma and grandpa are having more of it these days, new Swedish research suggests.

According to the study, the last quarter century has seen a dramatic rise in the frequency of sex among the 70-year-old set, whether married or unmarried. And as an added bonus, seniors today (particularly women) say they're much more satisfied with their liaisons than the previous generation -- facing less sexual dysfunction and feeling more positive about the experience.

"Our study shows that a large majority of elderly consider sexual activity and sexual feelings a natural part of late life," said study author Nils Beckman, a doctoral candidate with the neuropsychiatric epidemiology unit at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at Gothenburg University. "It is thus important that health professionals and others take sexuality into consideration, irrespective of age."

The findings are reported online in the British Medical Journal.
Beckman and his team reviewed surveys concerning sexual behavior and attitudes that had been completed by more than 1,500 healthy 70-year-old Gothenburg residents over a 30-year period.

The polls had been conducted in 1971-1972, 1976-1977, 1992-1993, and 2000-2001.
Between the first survey and the last, the frequency of sexual intercourse was found to have increased among all groups. Among married men, 68 percent said they were engaging in the practice in the latest poll, compared with 52 percent in 1971, while among married women the number had risen from 38 percent to 56 percent.

Among unmarried men, the jump went from 30 percent to 54 percent in the same 30-year span, while among unmarried women the observed bump was from just under 1 percent to 12 percent.

Women seemed to make the most headway in terms of increasing their sexual satisfaction. While men expressed more positive attitudes about sex in 1971, by 2001 the gender difference had evaporated.

As well, more 21st-century women said they were highly satisfied with their sex; fewer said they had low satisfaction; more said they experienced an orgasm during sex; and fewer said they had never had an orgasm.

Regarding the degree to which the respondents said they felt "very happy" about their relationship, the three-decade trend also moved in a similarly positive direction for both genders: rising from 40 percent to 57 percent among men, and from 35 percent to 52 percent among women.

Beckman and his colleagues speculated that, in part, the findings might simply reflect the degree to which Western societies have become more comfortable in dealing with sexual matters frankly and openly -- perhaps leading to a greater willingness to honestly report sexual encounters.

"(And) maybe it has become more permissible to leave an unhappy marriage today," suggested Beckman. "And even for widows [and] widowers to establish new relations."
Whatever the explanation, S. Jay Olshansky, a professor of public health and senior research scientist at the Center on Aging at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), said the findings closely mirror the results of similar research conducted at UIC and elsewhere.
"Probably the addressing of physiological problems with the development of medications like Viagra explain some -- but not all -- of the upward sexual activity trend," he said. "But the most important point being made here is that when it comes to sex, clearly it doesn't matter what age you are. At least most men and many women still have a desire to have it as they age."

Shop-worn sports cliches for a serious problem -- a concussion.

But new research suggests that high school football coaches are getting a lot better at spotting a concussion and managing the problem, although there's still room for improvement.

"Our knowledge about concussions is expanding rapidly. The traditional idea was that 'getting a bell rung' was not serious, but those symptoms can be a sign of a concussion and need to be evaluated," said Steve Broglio, assistant professor of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, who studies concussions in high school athletes.
Each year, more than seven million high school students participate in interscholastic sports in the United States, and there are approximately 1.4 million sports injuries, according to a 2006 national sports injury survey.

The good news is that injury rates have dropped by half in the last decade as sports medicine techniques have improved, along with a growing awareness of the importance of preventing and treating injuries, said Dawn Comstock, an assistant professor at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. She administers the survey, which tracks sports-related injuries at 100 high schools throughout the country.

But the injuries being reported today are more serious. "There are more fractures, severe knee injuries, and the proportion of injuries requiring surgery is higher," she said.

This could be due to a jump in chronic overuse problems -- more young athletes are playing one sport year-round, using the same muscle groups over and over. But the increase could also be due to improved sports medicine techniques, which means earlier diagnosis and treatment of many injuries before they become serious, leaving the more serious ones for the statistics charts, Comstock said.

Whatever the reasons, the emerging data and new research into sports injuries among high school athletes is bringing needed attention to what athletic professionals say has been a long neglected area.

"There are 1.2 million high school football athletes, compared to 38,000 college and 1,700 professional football players," Broglio said. "At the high school level, where there are the greatest number of injuries, there is the least amount of medical attention -- one athletic trainer for 300 to 500 children, compared to three or four for one college football team of 120."
Tight school budgets are part of the reason, said Jon Almquist, the athletic training program administrator for the Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools. Schools necessarily focus on educational priorities rather than athletics.

But a second reason for the lack of attention, according to Comstock, has been the wrong assumption that high school sports injuries are inevitable. "There's a general perception that sports injuries are just the price you have to pay for playing, which isn't true," she said.
At a meeting of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) last week in St. Louis, Broglio presented the results of a study that measured the varying speeds at which high school football players took hits to their heads, and where on the head the hits occurred. The findings will not only help researchers pinpoint how and when concussions are most likely to occur, they should help coaches retool a player's on-field technique to avoid unnecessarily risky moves.

Also at the meeting, certified athletic trainer Erin O'Donoghue reported that high school coaches in a survey she conducted scored an average of 80 out of 100 points on questions testing them on their expertise in recognizing concussions. Those who had attended workshops about concussions (approximately one-fifth of the coaches) or had a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published kit about concussions were the most informed.
"Our educational efforts have been effective," she said.

To further improve safety for young athletes, NATA has published a summary statement with 11 strategies for anyone -- coaches, athletic directors, parents -- interested in providing comprehensive medical care to high school athletes.

Among the recommendations

Organizations that sponsor high school athletics should put in place a health-care team to ensure timely and appropriate care for all athletes;
Those same organizations need to develop an emergency action plan to ensure that injuries and illnesses are treated promptly;
Students participating in sports should have a physical exam to detect any health problems that might be aggravated by physical activity.

"Our hope is that the summary statement and strategies will together provide an opportunity for all high school athletes to get appropriate medical treatment whenever and wherever they play sports," said Almquist, who chaired the task force and is lead author of the statement.

THE DERMATOLOGIST FROM HELL!!

Thanks for reading my Blog I hope some of my information has been helpful to you in your every day life. I have some personal information that I experienced and I thought I would pass it along to everyone. This is for everyone living in the St. Louis area and having the need for a Dermatologist. I had a mole located on my chest that had been there for many, many years. I was always told that if a growth like that ever changed in any way to have it looked at by a doctor. Well mine changed so I went to my General Practitioner. He said it wasn't cancerous but should be removed and referred me to a Dermatologist Dr. J.B.G. I use the term "doctor" very loosely. Not having ever been to a Dermatologist I really didn't know what to expect. The first visit was all information gathering with her nurses and SHE (the doctor) came in the room, spent about 8 minutes and kinda poked at the mole a couple times and took a picture of it. Now I would describe it (the mole) as about the size of a jelly bean, not the real jelly beans but those smaller ones sometimes called "birds eggs". So she scheduled a day for the procedure in her office there in the Physicians Office Bldg. on Dunn Rd. St. Louis Mo. Now not being a medical person I didn't think this was going to m be a big deal. You know 10 - 15 minutes snip, snip it's done ....right? NOPE, it took about an hour and 17 stitches!!!! Take a look..............

OUCH. During the "procedure" SHE cut me in 3 diffrent spots that were not numbed and I thought I was gonna DIE!! Never did SHE apologize or give any indication that SHE was concerned about hurting me and didn't even acknowledged that SHE did hurt me. After it was over I was instructed not to put any kind of antibiotics cream or any dressing over it and was not prescribed antibiotics of any kind. I was told to just use Vaseline. To "CUT" the story short after the stitches were taken out 2 weeks later the spot looked really nasty, again SHE showed no concern at all. 2 weeks after the stitches were removed I went back for a check up and this is what it looked like then.

I finally went to another Doctor and HE cleaned it and prescribed antibiotics cream and pills and it all cleared up in about 10 days. So if anyone out there has a story like this and would like to talk about it (without nameing names) feel free to post it here.
